ITWeb Business Intelligence Summit 2017

Meet Dr Rado Kotorov, from Information Builders (US), at the 12th Business Intelligence Summit in March 2017. He will highlight the importance of governing data across data domains, as well as the enterprise. Pre-registration is already open. The agenda will be unveiled in just under two weeks' time. Watch this space or contact Allyson Towle for more details.

Effective data governance plays a crucial role within any organisation. It sets up the framework for data management and usage, and it creates processes for resolving data issues and allowing business users to make solid business decisions based on quality data.

Data governance isn't merely about meeting regulatory requirements and ensuring compliance. A good and successful data governance programme should open up visibility into the business, which in turn, will lead to transparency that can reap previously unimagined opportunities, such as new revenue streams, improved customer satisfaction, lowered costs and complexity.

Dr Rado Kotorov, chief innovation officer and VP of global product marketing Information Builders (US), will be presenting on 'Building a business case for data governance' at the ITWeb Business Intelligence Summit to be held at The Forum in Bryanston on 14 and 15 March 2017.

Speaking of what businesses are doing wrong in light of data governance, Kotorov says the biggest wrong is not doing data governance at all. "Many businesses obfuscate that fact by claiming that they are doing it with a home-grown technology. But that is two wrongs, and as we know two wrongs do not make one right."

He says the field is complex and this why data governance technologies have emerged. "Doing it in-house with home-grown technology typically means that businesses are doing it from time to time when a crisis emerges. Hence the two wrongs. First your efforts are insufficient, and second you are wasting company resources to do a partial job."

According to Kotorov, businesses need to formulate an enterprise strategy, assign a business owner, dedicate resources and choose a software governance and MDM platform.

He says data is an organisation's most important asset today. "So treat it as such. Do not pay lip service. Show how data helps you generate revenues and maintain competitive advantage. Then make the case that you need to manage to like you manage your physical resources."

Delegates attending Dr Kotorov's presentation can expect to learn why data is a key asset, and how to monetise and manage data as an asset. They will also hear about how to formulate an overall strategy, and will learn what other companies are doing in this regard.
