Cape Town's security cluster installs eight new CCTV cameras to increase remote policing along Fransie van Zyl Drive.

Fransie van Zyl Drive in Parow, Cape Town will be a bit safer following the installation of eight CCTV cameras along the stretch of road.

Cape Town's mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith said in a statement that the new cameras were installed to increase remote policing in this area.

According to Smith, Fransie van Zyl Drive has been a hotspot for various criminal activities and the cameras have been installed in response to reports of robberies.

They will give the city's metro police the capacity to monitor this area and enable them to deploy resources more efficiently and optimally to the required areas, he said.

The devices were installed at a cost of almost R5 million and the funding was sourced from the Mayoral Urban Regeneration Programme, as well as R197 000 from ward allocations.

Smith says: "Monitoring community safety is a priority for us and these new devices will also help us to keep an eye on student movement from the Medical Campus at Tygerberg Hospital.

"The devices will also help to increase the response time to car accidents and monitor traffic flow in the area."
