VMware announced built-in support for Kubernetes in VMware Photon Platform at its VMworld conference in Barcelona yesterday. This will see IT operations teams being able to deliver Kubernetes as a service to their development teams.

The company describes Kubernetes as an open-source system for automating deployment, scaling, and management of containerised applications. Moreover, the system groups containers that make up an application into logical units for easy management and discovery.

The company's Photon Platform will add networking and storage services powered by VMware NSX and VMware Virtual SAN. These new services will see Photon Platform offering an end-to-end enterprise cloud-native infrastructure platform for running modern, containerised applications in production with support provided by VMware.

According to VMware, today's organisations are using innovative applications and services that deliver new customer experiences to set themselves apart from their competitors. "To speed up application development life cycles, developers are adopting cloud-native application methodologies, architectures and technologies."

VMware's Photon Platform will now give access to the services needed to build and run modern applications, including Kubernetes, as an on-demand service in clients' data centres. "The Photon Platform automates IT infrastructure provisioning and allows organisations to focus on their development efforts versus building, operating and supporting a custom solution," said Paul Fazzone, vice president and general manager, Cloud-Native Applications Business Unit, VMware.

He added that the VMware Photon Platform is a big step forward as it empowers IT teams to deliver, secure and operate the modern services that development teams require with the infrastructure automation demanded by today's enterprises.

The Photon Platform is based on VMware's hypervisor, network virtualisation and hyper-converged storage solutions, and equips customers with previously unseen speed and agility to deliver innovative software solutions to market faster than ever before.

VMware Photon Platform will be available in Q4 2016, and pricing and licensing will be announced at that time.
