Obsidian Systems to host Docker-focused enterprise IT event

Johannesburg, 19 Oct 2016

Obsidian Systems, the leader in open source technology development, services and solutions, a reseller of Docker container technology for Linux and Microsoft-based apps, will participate in an enterprise app and open source industry brunch for existing and aspiring Docker value-added resellers.

Many see containers as being a 'silver bullet' to configuration management; the reality is that these require maintenance - and that boils down to hands-on configuration.

In a bid to address this misperception, the Docker open source project is spearheading the migration of app development towards cloud and the roll-out of the Docker software containerisation platform.

This platform brings together a series of capabilities which include orchestration, security, scheduling, management, networking and content distribution, which meets the need to containerise monoliths, to lift and shift.

Docker containers allow users to package apps into a standardised unit for software development and includes everything required to run, including code, runtime, system tools, and system libraries.

The value lies in being able to enable developers and system administrators to collaborate on distributed applications.

Obsidian Systems MD Muggie van Staden will join Glenn Gerrard, Director, EMEA Channel & Alliances at Docker, and Steven Thwaites, EMEA Technical Presales Lead at Docker, at several sessions to deliberate over a number of key themes.

Topics up for discussion include the various components that make up the Docker platform, and how they can be applied to modern app architectures to support the software supply chain.

"There are many benefits to deploying Docker, particularly in terms of the scalability of applications-based containers. We are proud to be in partnership with Docker to empower businesses that enable the collaboration and communication of both software developers and infrastructure professionals, while continuously allowing the process of software delivery and infrastructure changes," says Van Staden.

The Docker Project event is scheduled to take place at The Kitchen Bar, Sandton, Johannesburg on 25 October, from 9:30am, and The Two Oceans Aquarium, V&A Waterfront, Dock Avenue, Cape Town, South Africa on 27 October from 9:30am.
