Vodacom is extending zero-rated education access for students at South African universities who are being impacted by the ongoing #FeesMustFall student protests across the country.

Telkom was the first operator to yesterday announce it would zero-rate university Web site access for students and absorb the cost for reverse billing URL services. Cell C and MTN followed suit with similar announcements later in the day.

Vodacom today announced it is in the process of extending its e-learning programme to participating universities across the country. Discussions are under way with universities to fast-track the implementation of the initiative.

This will enable universities to provide free access to their academic content to all Vodacom student subscribers, until the end of this academic year.

Vodacom says the university initiative is a demonstration of the group's core belief that ICT and mobile technology can be utilised to improve and advance learning, address skills development and help in finding employment.

Vodacom says its e-school portal, which launched in January 2015, now has almost 177 000 registered learners. The telco also launched zero-rated careers platform NXT LVL in June, which enables job-seekers to browse job sites, upload their CVs and apply for available positions free of charge.
