Lenovo unveiled its modular smartphone, Moto Z, at an event in Midrand yesterday, a move that heralds the return of Motorola to South Africa.

The PC giant bought Motorola Mobility from Google in late 2014.

The device comes with Moto Mods add-ons - including a JBL speaker, battery pack, a Hasselblad camera and a projector - which users can 'snap' on to the phone to start using.

The 5.19mm device comes in two colours - black and lunar grey. Lenovo says the frame of the Moto Z is made of military aircraft-grade aluminium and stainless steel.

The device is powered by a quad-core Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage with support for up to 2TB microSD cards, as well as 30 hours of battery life.

Other features include a 13-megapixel (MP) camera with optical image stabilisation and laser autofocus. Also, the front-facing 5MP camera has a wide-angle lens and flash.

The smartphone is not water resistant, but Lenovo says it has water-repellent coating, which shields the phone from rain, splashes or spills. It also comes with fingerprint reader.

There is a definite gap in our cellular phone market for smartphones that are truly innovative.

Graham Braum, general manager for Mobile Business Group, says Lenovo Africa is "excited to be launching the flagship Moto Z smartphone in SA, as we believe that there is a definite gap in our cellular phone market for smartphones that are truly innovative, and don't merely make small improvements to existing models."

We believe this new Moto Z ecosystem is the future of mobile, says Lenovo Africa's Graham Braum.

The Moto Z enables users to choose the capabilities of their smartphones and instantly transform their mobiles into whatever they need, whenever they need it, says Braum.

"Ultimately, we believe this new Moto Z ecosystem is the future of mobile and will come to define a new era of consumer expectations. The pioneering Moto Mods enable users to reach the maximum potential in a snap."

The Moto Z will be available to South African consumers on 1 November at selected stores at a recommended retail price of R12 999.
