Following the success of their first Stikeez campaign, South African retailer Pick n Pay has returned the suction-cupped toys - this time accompanied by an app.

As in the last campaign, customers will get a Stikeez figurine for every R150 they spend.

The new Stikeez comes in a range of 24 figurines which users can collect and swap with friends, says Pick n Pay.

The campaign - "Stikeez 2 Creatures of the Deep" - has a sea theme with many of the characters based on marine animals.

The app - Pick n Pay Stikeez of the Deep - requires players to be near a Pick n Pay store to 'catch' the creatures.

Available on iOS and Android platform, the app was developed by Cape Town-based company Sea Monster, who also created the augmented reality app for Pick n Pay's Super Animals campaign.

John Bradshaw, head of customer and loyalty division at Pick n Pay, said: "The team at Sea Monster have done a brilliant job in creating a great app in just a few months. It's a brand new app and we hope that customers will like it.

"We know how much our customers enjoyed the Super Animals app, and so we're trying something different with the Stikeez app.

"The idea is to provide some good fun and excitement for our customers and reward them for shopping at Pick n Pay," he explained.

"We know that our customers loved Stikeez 1 so we have been thinking of the right time to bring them back. It does take a long time to plan and execute a campaign like this."

Customers can also buy a colourful submarine-shaped collector's album to store their Stikeez in from Pick n Pay for R50 or plush toys of the characters for R99.

The campaign started on 24 October and will end on 18 December, or while stocks last.
