SA's ICT industry players will convene at GovTech 2016 in Midrand for the four-day government technology conference.

On Sunday, government officials and private sector stakeholders will convene at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand for the 2016 Government Technology Conference (GovTech 2016) to explore how technology is improving the lives of citizens.

The government conference, organised by the State Information Technology Agency (SITA), will feature presentations from top-ranking members of state directly involved in overseeing e-government initiatives.

The theme for this year's event is ICT for development, access and growth, as well as the role of technology in improving service delivery.

SITA CEO Setumo Mohapi previously noted this year's conference will explore the role of technologies in meeting critical goals in the National Development Plan.

The government speaker list includes Gauteng premier David Makhura, minister of telecommunications and postal services Siyabonga Cwele, telecommunications and postal services deputy minister Hlengiwe Mkhize, as well as Godfrey Leseba, chairperson of the Integrated Justice System (IJS) board of the Department of Justice.

Lesaba will provide a strategic update on progress being made on the IJS, which is one of the major initiatives driving national ICT spending in South Africa.

With about 70 technology projects running, the IJS is expected to be fully functional by the end of the 2018/19 financial year, with 28 key performance indicators in place, says SITA.

Other stakeholders expected at the conference include Vuyani Jarana, chief officer at Vodacom Business; Bruno Lanvin, executive director of INSEAD and co-author of the World Economic Forum (WEF) global information technology report; and chief economist of the Competition Commission of South Africa, Liberty Mncube.

Lanvin will share his understanding of the global rankings in the latest report from the WEF and lessons to be learnt from countries that have scored highly.

This year's GovTech conference takes place from 30 October to 2 November.
