Leading provider of open source software and services Obsidian Systems has announced its sponsorship of the annual Scrum Gathering South Africa, hosted by Scrum Alliance, scheduled for 3 and 4 November in Cape Town.

Founded in 2001 Scrum Alliance is a non-profit professional membership and certification organisation established to 'transform the world of work' by engaging all stakeholders on international best practices and values that help create and sustain effective workplaces of the future.

Agility is the central theme and this year's event will feature keynote presentations from Danie Roux (@DanieRoux), Jim Benson (@ourfounder) and Gitte Klitgaard (@NativeWired), who will cover issues like 'the courage to be agile' and 'Goldilocks at work - getting it just right'.

In its pre-emptive marketing of the Scrum Gathering, the organisation asks "when was the last time you put 'collaborative and enjoyable' in the same sentence with 'business goals'?

Muggie van Staden, MD of Obsidian Systems, says the company looks forward to participating in this premier business event and believes that open source technology will continue to exert influence on the local business landscape.

"Open source innovation and services is certainly a growing influence... we continue to witness greater adoption across numerous industries. Access to free, enterprise-grade software that is secure, can be adopted and grow with organisations is a major contributor to effective workplaces. The fact is that open source supports core processes and procedures running most companies today."

Obsidian will use its participation in the event to emphasise the quality and depth of offerings alongside its industry partners Guruhut, a collective of Java programmers, and Atlassian, the Australian enterprise software firm best known for the JIRA application and Autumn Leaf. The Cape Town based arm will expand Obsidian's footprint and bring additional expertise in Big Data solutions.
