Open access fibre-optic network operator FibreCo Telecommunications today announced the appointment of Sammy Thamsanqa Mafu as business development executive.

Mafu joins FibreCo from state-owned Broadband Infraco, where he was chief marketing and sales officer.

FibreCo says he will be responsible for driving growth in the company and new business initiatives, as well as aligning FibreCo's growth strategy with government's national policy framework on universal connectivity across all provinces.

"Mafu is well positioned to drive FibreCo's business development strategy. He brings a wealth of experience that will help position FibreCo's open access broadband connectivity solutions to education and health clusters as well as underserviced communities," says Simon Harvey, FibreCo CEO.

Mafu has over 21 years of telecommunications experience in sales, marketing, product development, strategy and commercial deal structuring working as a founder staff member at Cell C.

Previous positions held were at JDA, Telkom, MTN and Siemens.

Mafu holds a BA and postgrad degree in management from the University of Cape Town, MBA from Hull in the UK, and has been assigned the Chartered Marketer designation by Wits University and the Marketing Association of South Africa.

FibreCo's network consists of over 4 000km of underground fibre routes, as well as carrier-grade equipment hosting facilities interconnecting over 50 sites country-wide, including connectivity to Johannesburg, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, Durban, Port Elizabeth and East London.
