Tech giant Amazon launched its streaming video service, Amazon Prime Video, globally this week, including in SA.

It will cost $2.99 (R40) per month for the first six months and $5.99 (R80) thereafter.

The video-on-demand service offers viewers original content like The Grand Tour.

"Prime Video members can watch anytime, anywhere through the Amazon Prime Video app on Android and iOS phones and tablets, Fire Tablets, popular LG and Samsung Smart TVs, or online at PrimeVideo.com - and can also download all titles to mobile devices for offline viewing," the company said.

"Members can watch Amazon Original Series in English, with French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish subtitled and dubbed versions also available."

Members can also download all movies and TV shows for offline viewing, meaning content can be viewed on the go without using data.

Amazon Prime Video allows members to control how much data they use when streaming and downloading video by choosing between good, better and best visual quality settings.

The service joins a competitive market in SA. Netflix, ShowMax and other smaller players are already available in the country.
