Each soldier using the Gamer simulation system can get an individual performance breakdown of how they did in the exercise.

Defence and security company Saab has developed an app called WE:Go for soldiers, which downloads each individual soldier's exercise results onto a smartphone or tablet.

WE:Go is an extension of Saab's instrumented training system called Gamer, used by the South African National Defence Force, which sees the instructor control simulated exercises from a specialised laptop. The soldiers wear vests that capture their movements and how they reacted to simulated minefields or bombs.

Currently, most training after-action reviews present the exercise results to the entire group, platoon or company. WE:Go focuses on each individual soldier's results.

The app automatically downloads each soldier's data from the Gamer system and provides the participant's positions, movements, weapon engagements, rounds fired, number of hits and misses, and wounds sustained throughout the exercise. Other data, such as video from helmet cameras, can be replayed in the app.

"High-fidelity training is essential to build a soldier's confidence," says Asa Thegstrom, head of Saab business unit training and simulation, who believes the feedback from the app will help do this.

"Saab believes this app will increase soldier motivation and make exercise follow-up more effective and rewarding."

WE:Go is exclusive to Saab customers, and will be included in future upgrades of the Gamer system.
