Cyber security awareness: a learning path

Centurion, 18 Jan 2017

Cyber security continues to dominate the news, as security teams within organisations battle to keep systems and networks safe in an ever-changing environment.

The advent of technologies and services such as the Dark Web, encrypted communication and anonymously traversing the Web, have changed the way in which cyber security solutions are defined, implemented and managed. Laws, standards and regulations see the light (or not) in a quest to provide guidance in the governing of security in a complex cyber-space.

Cyber security is, however, not just about being compliant. It is rather about a real understanding of cyber crime and the methods utilised by criminal entities to gain illegal access. It is about being aware that the interconnectedness of cyber-space requires all of us to be diligent in protecting not only our own information and online assets, but that of the company and the country.

Staff members need a deep understanding of the real consequences of, for example, clicking on an unsafe link received in an email. What will be the impact on me as an employee, my friends and family, the business, and the country?

Cyber security awareness campaigns have to be more than merely training employees for compliance reasons. As companies continuously need to defend against all types of adversaries that utilise innovative techniques and technologies to gain entry into networks, it is vital to incorporate staff as one of the defence lines. This can only be achieved via structured training content that incorporates the latest methods, techniques and technologies used in attacks, defining individual learner paths via real-time evaluations and simulations as well as using micro-learning techniques.

The Cyber Security Institute is not only dedicated to adding value to cyber awareness campaigns, but also providing a range of unique, in-house developed cyber security training and services. Examples include cyber analysis, cyber forensics, penetration testing, cyber investigations and governance.
