Now more than ever, South African businesses need to streamline their telecommunications to bring together voice, data and internet.

To find out the trends in the local telecommunications market, Neotel, in partnership with ITWeb, is conducting an online telecoms survey to determine the approach of South African organisations to their telecommunication requirements.

"The overall purpose of this study is to get to know our customers better. In many cases we focus on awesome technical products. In this case, however, we are focusing on finding out the way in which are customers consume the products and what drives them towards them," says Andre Schoeman, Head of Product Domain Management at Neotel.

According to Schoeman, telecoms and its intertwined relationship with the IT department pivotally hinges on keeping abreast of what is happening in the industry.

"Not only are new products arriving, but also pricing changes, interfaces with the products and consumption models. Failure of any company to constantly review the market and adapt their strategy will let them fall behind the rest of their peers."

Schoeman believes that the drive towards cloud is gaining significant momentum now.

"Cloud service adoption has grown significantly and the snowball effect is growing rapidly," he says.

He also points out that in support of cloud services network services have also changed, not only from a technology point of view, but also in a commercial sense, which allows more flexibility and consumption-based models.

With regards to the success of implementing successful telecoms solutions, Schoeman says understanding the business needs first and crafting a solution based on this is vital.

"No technology can fix a flawed business process or a poorly articulated problem statement," he says.

There is a very close relationship between IT and telecoms services, he notes.

"In fact the line has totally blurred now, especially with the dependence of IT services on the underlying networks."
