The annual Global Agripreneurs Summit 2017 will be held for the first time in SA this year.

The event will showcase the latest in agriculture tech and see 50 global start-ups compete for the 'Agripreneur of the Year' title in the Future Agro Challenge (FAC).

The summit will take place in Johannesburg from 12 to 15 March. The four-day event aims to connect innovators with investors and key stakeholders in the food and agribusiness sector.

It is hosted by IndustryDisruptors, the Swedish international development cooperation agency, the ministry of foreign affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and the South African Department of Science and Technology.

This is the third year the Future Agro Challenge has taken place. It is part of a global initiative to discover fundable ventures which address challenges across the food supply chain.

Last year, Chilean start-up VACUCH won the title. The company creates an antibacterial milk liner that mitigates bovine mastitis and reduces the amount of bacteria in milk.

"The food chain is broken. We need a bottom-up approach to identifying new and sustainable solutions to current and future challenges," says Carla Tanas, FAC co-founder.

Start-ups competing in the competition in March include competitors from 50 different countries, including SA, Peru, Mozambique, Bangladesh and Jordan.
