QbTech has officially changed its name to MCI IT, albeit with the same registration number.

According to the company CEO Vusi Twala, the change was necessitated by the need to differentiate itself from another company with a similar name. "We realised there was too much of a similarity between our previous name and a company called Qbcon and unfortunately we had common clients. This propelled us to not only change our name but to also go in a completely different direction and try to find a uniquely South African name. MCI IT is derived from the holding company's name Mcimbi Business Solutions (the first three letters) which is a Nguni name for a gathering," he said.

Twala explained that although there will be no immediate, structural changes, the most important factor will be that the company will be relaunching its products. "We have few products that we will be relaunching namely MCI Lab-i and MCI IT computerised maintenance management system (MCI CMMS).We also market business intelligence tools for companies such as QlikView and AIGS (YellowFin), those ones normally come in when we have to build models for them."

As part of the improvements and adjustments of the company's products, Twala highlighted that the MCI Lab-i product is undergoing a few changes. "The product is currently undergoing development. In fact our clients are busy testing the final components. We expect to go live next month."

Furthermore, he explained, as part of the relaunch, all the products are going to be fully version controlled, meaning clients will get all the changes to products without any effort on their part. "We are going to manage the release of different changes within the products so we can make it easier for clients to get changes without them having to prompt us."

MCI IT will now also be aligning itself with international operational best practices and future plans include rewriting its applications in cloud-based tools from Progress and Microsoft.
