Korean electronics company LG has changed the aspect display ratio of its new flagship smartphone, the LG G6. It is now 18:9, called the Univisium aspect ratio, a size used in cinematography.

The new smartphone was launched at Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona.

LG says its customers wanted a bigger screen but not a bigger phone. To make this a reality, the company created a device with a small bezel ? the space between the end of the screen and the end of the phone ? and changed the aspect ratio.

According to research done by the company, the average American spends nearly half a day staring at a screen. "We are now spending more time with our phones than with our significant others," says Ian Hwang, director of the LG product planning team.

Andrew Coughlin, business leader of LG Electronics Northern Europe, says bigger screens are "becoming less a preference, more a necessity".

The new aspect ratio means the device is longer but not wider and is meant to fit easily into a user's hand. LG says the new aspect ratio will soon become an "industry standard" as it offers more "useful" screen space.

Double vision

The G6 keeps the twin-camera set-up that was introduced with the G5. However, this year, both cameras feature the same sensors and the same amount of megapixels. One camera is a wide 125-angle lens and the other is a regular size lens; both have 13MP.

Last year, the company's flagship was a modular device, the LG G5. It had a removable battery and a host of 'Friends' - optional add-on accessories. At the time, LG said if customers bought the extra fittings (such as a camera grip or speaker) they would fit future models.

This is not the case, as the G6 features an aluminium unibody and no place to add last year's mods.

Other features include water-resistance, Google Assistant, HDR10 and Dolby Vision, and Quick Charge 3.0.
