Recently re-branded Alcatel is focusing on younger generations with its new smartphone that features an interactive LED display on the back.

The phone, the Alcatel A5 LED, lights up when the user receives a message, an incoming call or social media alert. It can be programmed to display different 'light-shows' when certain people are calling or when the device is charging.

The 5.2-inch A5 LED features 4G LTE connectivity, an octa-core processor, and runs Android Marshmallow. The battery on the device is 2800mAh. The A5 also has a 5MP front camera with a flash, and an 8MP rear camera with dual-tone flash. It will retail for EUR199 (R2 700).

The gimmicky A5 was one of several devices launched by the company at Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona.

The other devices were all touted as affordable smartphones. However, no prices or release dates for the South African market have been announced yet.

Last year, it was reported that globally, Alcatel is the fifth largest handset manufacturer with a 4.5% market share. In SA, it is number four with an 11% market share. The company says this is largely due to its partnerships with firms like Vodafone, which use the Alcatel product with their own branding.

Alcatel also introduced a 4G-connected 2-in-1 tablet which is a cheaper version of devices made by Microsoft, Samsung and others.

The Plus 12 runs Windows 10 and has a 12-inch full HD display. It has a detachable 4G LTE keyboard which doubles as a WiFi hotspot for up to 15 devices. It also has Microsoft's digital assistant technology, Cortana, built-in.
