Vumatel has acquired Durban-based fibre-to-the-home company Estate Connexions (ECX) expanding its footprint to the KwaZulu-Natal province.

Speaking about the acquisition Niel Schoeman, CEO of Vumatel says, "The acquisition allows Vuma to develop a footprint in KwaZulu-Natal and contributes towards our vision of building a connected South Africa."

According to a statement, ECX builds high-speed open access fibre-optic networks. Similar to Vumatel, the company installs the infrastructure and allows Internet service providers to compete freely over the open access infrastructure to provide Internet services to the customer.

Arthur Beavon, CEO of ECX says he looks forward to expanding the company's Durban-based footprint.

"The investment by Vumatel is a vote of confidence in what ECX has achieved to date. We are excited to bring Vuma to Durban and continue to provide KwaZulu-Natal with high speed open access fibre."

Vumatel brings its community-focussed ethos, a number of additional Internet service providers and investment to Durban to support the team, the statement reads.
