Minister in the Department of Science and Technology (DST) Naledi Pandor is looking for new candidates to serve on the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) board.

In a statement, Pandor has invited interested parties to nominate candidates for appointment to the board in line with section five of the HSRC Act.

The positions looking to be filled are that of chairperson who will be designated by the minister, a CEO, and no fewer than six and no more than nine members, says the DST.

The members of the board, including the chairperson, will be appointed in their personal capacity, the department says.

"The members will serve on a part-time basis for a period not exceeding four years, from 1 November 2017 to 31 October 2021. Allowances will be in accordance with the National Treasury guidelines for remuneration."

The HSRC is the DST's statutory research agency dedicated to research in the social sciences and humanities on the African continent, conducting public research in areas that are crucial to development.

According to the department, the council serves to initiate, undertake and foster strategic basic research and applied researching human science, and to gather, analyse and publish data relevant to developmental challenges in SA.

Furthermore, the council aims to stimulate public debate through the effective dissemination of research results, respond to the needs of marginalised groups in society by researching and analysing developmental problems, as well as make publicly available new data sets to underpin research.
