New Netgear smart managed switches: greater choice of port counts, power budgets

Johannesburg, 28 Apr 2017

Duxbury Networking has expanded its range of Netgear ProSAFE Power-over-Ethernet (POE) smart managed switches, bringing the benefits of simplicity and cost-savings to network deployments of all sizes - particularly within small and medium-sized organisations. The switches are designed to give users a greater choice of port counts and power budgets as they apply to varying business needs.

According to Tobie van Schalkwyk, Business Development Manager at Netgear distributor Duxbury Networking, the proliferation of end devices demanding power via Ethernet cabling is placing increased strain on network switching structures.

"For example, wireless access points and pan-tilt-zoom HD cameras using Wave 2 802.11ac WiFi and requiring POE+ power significantly increase the demands on POE switches."

He says Netgear's new smart managed switches address this challenge, while being purpose-designed for converged networks where voice, video and data are carried on a single network platform.

"Netgear's new compact form factor switches - which include units with eight and 16 POE-capable Gigabit copper ports plus additional dedicated Gigabit fibre ports for uplinks with greater distance - are packed with powerful features that enhance any type of business network," he says.

"The switches come with a comprehensive set of L2+/Layer 3 Lite features providing network path determination and logical addressing functions," he notes, adding the switches are able to optimise specific network applications and are ideally suited to situations where low port density is desired for specific areas or extensions of networks.

"Netgear understands the importance of providing a wide choice of port counts and power budgets that can adapt to business needs. As a result, organisations can now deploy denser POE devices connected to a cost-effective switch, with a reasonable POE power budget. This minimises the chances of users ending up with unused ports as is often the case when traditional switches are deployed."

Key features of Netgear's new switches include advanced, per-port controls for operation scheduling of POE connected devices. This simplifies the management of devices such as VOIP phones, IP security cameras, wireless access points, proximity sensors, LED lighting, door locks and other IOT devices that require network switches capable of supporting dense POE installations. The switches' Web browser-based management GUI helps unskilled users when it comes to configuration.

Together with the existing ProSAFE GS510TP, the Netgear smart managed switch line-up now consists of the GS510 TPP, the GS510TLP and the GS418TPP.

The Netgear ProSAFE GS510TP is an eight-port POE switch able to provide sufficient power for devices with up to 30w per port with a total power budget of 130w on the switch. In addition to these features, the new ProSAFE GS510TLP and 510TPP switches provide 75W and 190W POE budgets respectively, across eight POE+ (802.3at standard) ports.

The top-of-the range GS418TPP provides a 240W POE budget available across 16 Gigabit POE+ ports and is fan-less for applications in extremely noise-sensitive environments.

"With the ProSAFE GS418TPP, network managers can install POE+ ports in any environment needed where other switches cannot go, due to its slim design and the innovative Netgear Virtually Anywhere mounting system for vertical, horizontal, flat or perpendicular placement," explains Van Schalkwyk.

"Whether it's on the wall, strapped to a pole, under a desk or tabletop, in air passageways, or above drop-down ceilings, this mounting system enables a network manager to optimise placement of access points, IP cameras or VOIP endpoints and ensure cabling efficiency even outside the rack."
