South African consumers will be able to purchase Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus devices from today.

Samsung Electronics officially unveiled the Galaxy S8 smartphones at an event in New York in March, with pre-orders opening a day after the launch.

The South Korean company is looking to the S8 devices to repair its brand perception after its flagship phablet device, the Galaxy Note 7, had to be recalled last year and eventually cancelled after a fault in battery design led to the smartphones catching fire.

Some of the features on the new flagships are the infinity screen, 8MP F1.7 smart autofocus front camera, a 12MP F1.7 Dual Pixel rear camera, IP68 water and dust resistance, and always-on display.

The new phones do not include a physical home button at the bottom of the screen; instead it has embedded it below the display.

The S8 allows users to unlock their phone either by using a fingerprint scanner at the back, a traditional password or pattern, or by using an iris scanner or facial recognition software.

The recommended retail price is R15 499 for the S8 and R17 499 for the S8+.

Telkom, one of the local operators to stock the new flagships, says the devices are available on FreeMe packages.

The other cellular operators also offer the devices, via various packages.

Meanwhile, First National Bank (FNB) announced its customers will be able to purchase the S8 and S8+ through its smart devices offering.

In a statement, FNB says customers can place orders through its online banking channel and can expect to receive their devices within five to seven working days.
