The African National Congress' national executive subcommittee has proposed the rollout of WiFi hotspots across rural areas in SA, although the ruling party doesn't specify how this will be achieved.

Yesterday, minister and National Executive Committee member Naledi Pandor presented outcome discussions of the ANC's two commissions on education, health, and science, technology and innovation.

The commissions, which comprised about 800 people, discussed all issues and recommendations presented to them, including those that emanated from reports from branches, regions and provincial workshops and councils, says a statement.

Pandor's presentation was a report back of the outstanding committee policy discussions following the ruling party's 4th National Policy Conference, which took place from 30 June to 5 July at NASREC in Johannesburg.

According to Pandor, members agreed that WiFi must be free, with particular attention given to creating WiFi hotspots in rural areas.

"We're seeing a widening gap between provision in the rural communities as compared to what is happening in a number of towns and metros with respect to availability of WiFi."

In addition, the committee recommended the ANC must ensure professions in science and technology are careers of choice and that public educational institutions are resourced to advance this ideal.

"The ANC must lead society to think more positively about ourselves and our innovation capabilities, and publicise advances that have been made by South African scientists and innovators."
