The basic graphic design app Paint, which has been part of Windows software for more than three decades, will not be included in the Windows 10 autumn Creators update later this year.
Microsoft says Paint will be deprecated, which means it will not be in active development and might be removed in future releases. The company says its functionality will be integrated into Paint 3D - an app which appeared in the Windows 10 Creators update.
Paint is a very simple app, but had some useful applications, such as image sizing and saving a screenshot as a shareable Jpeg.
Fans took to Twitter to express their grievances about the app being removed, saying it was a favourite app from their childhood.
Mark Hilltops? tweeted: "Seriously #microsoftpaint you can't get rid of paint, I've been trying to work out how to use it for 20 years... I need more time."
And Paul Fairie? tweeted: "Of all the things that might have survived the Trump era, I figured Microsoft Paint would have definitely been one."
Responding to the massive response, Microsoft released a statement saying: "Today, we've seen an incredible outpouring of support and nostalgia around MS Paint. If there's anything we learned, it's that after 32 years, MS Paint has a lot of fans. It's been amazing to see so much love for our trusty old app."
It says it will soon be making the app available for free through the Windows Store.
Microsoft released a list of those apps which will either be completely removed or deprecated in the next update. Among those to be removed are Outlook Express, the Reader app, and Reading List - reading functionalities will be integrated into Microsoft Edge.
