South African Airways (SAA) has appointed Vodacom group executive, Vuyani Jarana, as its new CEO, National Treasury said on Thursday.

Jarana is currently chief officer for Vodacom Business and Treasury said he will commence his duties at SAA "after his current employer has officially released him".

"Given that Mr Jarana has turned around a loss-making subsidiary of the Vodacom Group, Vodacom Business Africa, into a profitable and growth business, we believe he will be key in turning around South African Airways," finance minister Malusi Gigaba said in a statement.

National Treasury said Jarana has built a solid and transformed organisation with emphasis on both top line business growth, as well as margin expansion.

Gigaba told Members of Parliament at the Old Assembly Chamber in Parliament on Friday that to address stability and governance, the appointment of the new SAA CEO, was one of the measures he recently announced as part of the 14-point plan aimed at instilling confidence in the economy.

He said he was hopeful that Jarana's appointment would bring about stability at the airline that has had five CEOs between 2013 and 2017.

The minister said Jarana has some work cut out for him in order to turn the airline around and address the challenges which are being faced.
