The City of Joburg suspects malware has compromised its Web site.

Despite sounding off online security warnings, the City of Johannesburg's (COJ's) Web site is still a danger zone for users trying to access it via the Google Chrome browser. The site still brought up security alerts for users trying to access it this morning.

ITWeb first reported about the security alert on Wednesday. Several attempts by ITWeb employees to access the COJ site via Google Chrome proved futile.

The following message appears when clicking through to the site: "The site ahead contains malware. Attackers currently on www.joburg.org.za might attempt to install dangerous programs on your computer that steal or delete your information (for example, photos, passwords, messages and credit cards)."

A search of the site name on Chrome brings up another warning: "This site may harm your computer."

At the time, the COJ would not confirm whether its site was compromised, and simply said it is offline. "[The] Web site is currently offline, our apologies for any inconvenience," it said via Twitter.

However, the COJ has since reportedly said it suspects malware may have comprised the site's server, resulting in the security messages.

The COJ has not said when it expects these issues to be sorted.
