Support for denser device deployments with Netgear's new PoE+ switch

Johannesburg, 08 Aug 2017

A new network switch, designed to support denser deployments of new-generation devices, such as the latest IP surveillance, IP telephony and IOT solutions which require high-power Power-over-Ethernet (POE+), has been released by Netgear.

The Netgear Smart Managed Pro Switch - dubbed the GS724TPv2 - represents a solution capable of satisfying the switching requirements of even the most demanding home or business user, says Tobie van Schalkwyk, Senior Technology Architect at Duxbury Networking, the local Netgear distributor.

"The new switch, which features a robust POE power budget of 190W, is purpose-designed to support today's converged wireless networks where voice, video, data and IOT traffic are carried over a single network platform," he says.

"It offers network managers the advantage of connecting up to 24 power-hungry wireless access points, IP security cameras, LED lighting or VOIP endpoints to the network with a single wire for power and connectivity."

According to Van Schalkwyk, the switch presents cost-saving benefits to budget-conscious organisations which can take full advantage of its expansion capabilities to complement future growth objectives.

Key features of the Netgear GS724TPv2 Smart Managed Pro Switch include 24 POE+ copper ports and two dedicated SFP ports for fibre uplinks. It offers configurable Layer-2 network features including VLANs and POE operation scheduling.

As part of Netgear's Smart Managed Switch product family, the GS724TPv2 offers customised operation using an intuitive, Web browser-based management interface.

From a technical perspective, other advanced features include Access Control Lists (ACLs), L2/L3/L4 QoS (DiffServ), LACP link aggregation and Spanning Tree. The rackmount switch features Energy Efficient Ethernet (IEEE 802.3az) for maximum power savings and operates silently even at full power thanks to its temperature and load-based fan-speed control.
