Johannesburg-based Aptronics engineer Johan Grove has become the first Veeam Certified Architect in SA.

Grove qualified in the Veeam Certified Engineer - Advanced: Design and Optimisation V1 (VMCE-A: D&O V1) technical course, which was initially offered in New Orleans, US but is now available globally.

The course is aimed at IT specialists who are looking to become architects on the Veeam Availability Suite solution, such as system engineers and administrators, backup and virtualisation administrators, as well as solution architects and consultants.

"The course includes information on Veeam Availability Suite, where course participants are required to have a solid virtualisation, backup and recovery knowledge base, and must have already completed the standard three-day Veeam Certified Engineer certification," explains Claude Schuck, regional manager for Africa at Veeam.

He adds the company is focusing on skilling up local trainers and once they are accredited, local training will commence.

"Both courses can also be completed together over a five-day period.

"The instructor-led training is delivered by the company's authorised education centres worldwide. In SA, it is not yet fully available but our training partners are Torque IT and Axiz and they deliver instructor-led training on our behalf."

The course, which costs an estimated R9 000, is open to Veeam partners and customers, and to date only 327 people have completed the course globally since its launch in May.

Grov'e says the qualification has enabled him to design and implement the right solutions for Aptronics' Veeam customers with confidence. "The course covered the design of as well as best practice for Veeam solutions at enterprise customers.

"Part of the course entailed carrying out a design for a company and presenting it to your peers. This was very good experience for real life designs and presentations to customers on Veeam. Practical lessons such as installing and testing the theory in the Aptronics lab helped in improving our service. Our troubleshooting turnaround time has improved remarkably."

Aptronics is a platinum Veeam partner and the certification was required for Aptronics to retain its platinum status.
