Huawei will increase the number of OpenLabs facilities, Yan Lida, president for enterprise business group, told delegates at Huawei Connect 2017 yesterday.

According to Lida, the company will invest $200 million to see the number of these labs increase from 13 in 2017, to 25 in 2020.

Located at various Huawei headquarters across the globe, the OpenLabs allow Huawei officials to sit down with any kind of customer and partner to brainstorm about what can help leverage and create value for citizens in a certain city.

Huawei has described these labs as a key component in its global industry solutions practices.

All these facilities are connected to create a network of open labs, noted Edwin Diender, VP for government and public utility sector for Huawei's enterprise business group.

"Smart city open labs create a global network to help service providers simulate, aggregate and test whether a certain solution actually lives up to a certain expectation."

Diender added that if the solution lives up to expectation, then a joint decision will be taken to see if the solution can be commercialised or deployed for a city to create value.
