Tender Watch: Heavy hitting

Forget spring fever, this week's National Tender Bulletin feels like waking up Christmas morning after scoring high on Santa's 'Nice List'.

Government technology interest is a mere shadow of the extravagance of the last decade when projects were large and price tags even larger. The outcomes of these projects were less celebrated, however, and widespread disruption, financial losses and project failures gradually brought about a more prudent approach to technology strategy.

Economic difficulties hit the budget even harder and the past year has seen public sector tenders favouring targeted interventions, hardware refresh, additional capacity requirements and quick-fixes. On the other hand, substantial tenders - whether complex, costly or both -have only been seen rarely.

This week's bulletin, however, makes up for the unremarkable year with four notable tenders up for grabs: the Department of Water and Sanitation wants to outsource its IT services; the Defence Department is advertising for the establishment of a telecoms backbone infrastructure solution; the Department of Transport needs to redesign the National Land Transport Information System following legislative changes; and National Treasury needs assistance with the procurement and delivery management standard to deliver and manage e-education in the country.
