Live-streaming social media platform VOOV has become available in SA. It gives users a peek into the private lives of local celebrities, as well as allowing users to showcase their own talents.

The company says social media is rapidly evolving beyond photo sharing and pre-recorded video consumption, and live-streaming is the "next big thing".

VOOV, owned by Tencent, allows users to live broadcast themselves to the world, while discovering what other people are streaming in real-time. It focuses on having local celebrities share work they are doing behind the scenes, as well as operating as a talent show for users to get discovered.

Thando Thabethe, Somizi Mhlongo, Pearl Thusi, Khanyi Mbau and DJ Zinhle are among the first local celebrities to share on the platform. The company says the app gives users a glimpse into the unfiltered and intimate daily lives of celebrities.

"We are so excited to launch the first social live-streaming app in South Africa. VOOV gives everyone an equal opportunity to keep in touch with local celebrities, engage with other users' live streams, and create their own original content," says Makhosazana Zwane-Siguqa, head of VOOV SA.

"I'm particularly excited about the opportunity to discover fresh talent on the app every day. Our gifting feature allows viewers to reward their favourite stars for engaging with them. This makes for a tactile and unique interaction between the VJ and the viewer. A special moment indeed."

VOOV says it has implemented safety measures to ensure a safe and uncompromised user experience.

"A 24/7 local response team is always on standby for reports of harmful content, making it a fun and exciting environment for users to organically and authentically engage with each other," the company says in a statement.

VOOV is available to anyone over the age of 14. The app is available for both Android and Apple devices.
