The National Advisory Council on Innovation (NACI) has introduced an online central point for up-to-date science, technology and innovation information related to the National System of Innovation (NSI).

NACI, an entity of the Department of Science and Technology, confirmed the launch of the portal at the release of the 2016 Science Technology and Innovation indicators report last week.

In the statement, NACI says the National Science, Technology and Innovation Information Portal (NSTIIP) will be a single point of access for all stakeholders to collect and curate information on measures and analyses of all aspects of the NSI in South Africa.

According to NACI, the portal is a multi-year project that is being developed through different phases. The first phase is to pilot the portal using an initial set of data, while the second phase entails up-scaling the portal to include more features.

Some of the objectives of the NSTIIP are to enhance knowledge about the NSI and encourage a realistic adoption of a culture of innovation, decrease the existing fragmentation of information on innovation, and provide access to a range of data related to NSI stakeholders.

Meanwhile, Cabinet has approved the publication of the Science and Technology Laws Amendment Bill of 2017 for public comment.

The Bill proposes harmonising and standardising the provisions which regulate the operations and governance of the public entities reporting to minister of science and technology Naledi Pandor.

This will ensure consistency in all requirements to be met and processes to be followed by the entities as they relate to governance, says the Cabinet statement.
