Mustek, as of this week, will be the first local distributor to offer its resellers the Asus Z370 chipset series - the latest generation of motherboards to have been released by Intel.

This is according to Rui Cruz, Asus product manager at Mustek, speaking on the back of a local sales partnership announcement between Asus Republic of Gamers (ROG) and Mustek.

The partnership will see Mustek distribute and market Asus ROG's video graphics array (VGA) and motherboard products locally.

Mustek, a listed assembler and distributor of PCs and complementary ICT products in SA, says the "Z370 chipsets will power motherboards aimed specifically at the gamers planning to use new Intel Core "Coffee Lake" processors. These new processors have features that make them appealing to gamers and power users alike, with more cores, big caches and higher clock speeds."

Cruz adds the partnership allows Mustek to venture into the gaming industry. "Traditionally, Mustek has been focused on system building and solutions. The reason that this unique is that, never before has Mustek been geared towards offering dealers, truly gaming focused products.

"Yes, we had products that would allow our dealers to put together a power machine adequate for gaming. However, never have our component offerings been focused on the niche environment and its requirements. This partnership now affords Mustek dealers the opportunity to target this exponentially growing market."

The local gaming industry has over the past years become increasingly productive and globally competitive.

A report released by the local body, Serious About Games (SAG) earlier this year' states the local game development industry increased its revenue from R29.7 million in 2014 to R100 million in 2016. Meanwhile, various global reports indicate globally gaming is estimated to be a R1.3 trillion industry' with nearly two billion people playing games on various devices.

Frances Lombard, country product manager for Sub-Saharan Africa at Asus, says the company has been eyeing the SADC region for expansion opportunities.

"The SA landscape is rapidly evolving as more people are gaming now than ever before and becoming more mainstream. This is also leading to the retail sector strengthening. Through this partnership, we anticipate to see an even higher demand for such product offerings."
