Satellite broadband is driving socio-economic change, especially across healthcare, education, government services and rural connectivity in Africa.

This is according to satellite operator YahClick, which has released a new report along with AfricaCom to highlight some of the key developments of satellite broadband technology on the continent.

"We are seeing first-hand the benefits that satellite technology is bringing to communities and individuals across the world. It is facilitating business growth, optimising the provision of healthcare and enhancing accessibility to learning tools and resources," says Farhad Khan, Yahsat chief commercial officer.

"We strongly believe that better connectivity across Africa will help facilitate local and international businesses in connecting with consumers and allow government organisations to improve the provision of basic services such as healthcare and education," Khan adds.

YahClick is the satellite broadband Ka-band service provided by Yahsat, the UAE-based satellite operator. YahClick is present in 28 countries across the Middle East, Africa, South West and Central Asia, and to-date has installed over 51 000 terminals.

It will soon launch its third satellite, Al Yah 3, which it says will triple its existing presence in Africa.

The YahClick report provides a number of case studies on the key developments and major milestones of satellite broadband technology on the continent.

The report details successful projects in Kenya and SA, ranging from providing connectivity to remote libraries in SA, to promoting e-learning in Maasai community schools in Kenya. The group also aided the provision of financial services to around 1.2 million members of the Government Employees' Pensions Fund in SA.

YahClick will take part in the Connecting Africa stream at AfricaCom 2017. The event takes place from 7 to 9 November at the Cape Town International Convention Centre.
