Reduce your attack surface

Cape Town, 20 Nov 2017

Further to the findings from recent cyber security posture surveys completed by institutions from the education sector, the following areas were highlighted as key priorities for cyber protection and prevention.

Cyber security threats, priorities

* Vulnerability assessments, phishing simulations and cyber security advice and guidance.
* Protection and prevention, detection and response for overall risk reduction.
* User training, cyber essentials advice/guidance and cyber security products, services and solutions.
* Malware, ransomware and insider attacks - a huge problem.
* Top three concerns: lack of awareness and human error, social engineering related threats and ransomware/malware issues.

When looking at the top concerns listed, the most significant areas for the education sector are those related to:

* Social engineering; phishing and human error driven by a lack of awareness and ignorance of the subject.
* Vulnerability assessment management; unable to identify, prioritise and fix all vulnerable systems across a network using manual tools.

Cyber security packages

Understanding these priorities and threats, as well as listening to its customers, KHIPU has created a number of cost-effective packages to protect and prevent against cyber attacks. KHIPU has designed these bespoke packages for the education sector to address their cyber security 'priorities and threat concerns' by identifying:

* Vulnerabilities in the infrastructure: servers, networks, perimeter security and external systems.
* Overall risk to phishing attacks: users and infrastructure.
* Cyber security user awareness training and education needs.

By identifying these fundamental areas and applying best practice recommendations for ongoing protection and prevention, will reduce the risk of being breached by a cyber attack.

These new, low-cost packages include:

* Vulnerability assessment services (VAS)
* Simulated phishing and associated awareness services

Proven service - cyber attack prevention

These services have been very successful across the South African education sector. Sample customers include: University of Cape Town, Japari School, University of Fort Hare and North-West University. Please contact the KHIPU team for more information, including example reports.

"It's vital to understand your organisation's risk to cyber attacks and be able to provide the necessary awareness training and vulnerability assessment tools to limit your exposure," said Sakkie Janse van Rensburg, Executive Director, ICTS University of Cape Town.

"Even with heavy solution investments, it's still the users who are the last point of defence against any attack. One of our key approaches to address cyber threats is to provide awareness training to our staff. By educating users on what the risks are around cyber attacks, the implications to them both personally and at work, and how to identify phishing - will reduce our risk of a successful attack." Boeta Pretorius, Chief Director of IT, North-West University.
