TurnUp Music, the app dedicated to making local music accessible to the South African audience, will now come standard on Samsung's mid-range Z series smartphones.

Music streaming services like Apple Music, Deezer and Google Music require users to pay a monthly subscription fee and then use their data to stream songs.

TurnUp Music allows users to only pay for the songs they want to listen to, by downloading them onto their device. This means users do not use mobile data every time they want to play music, making it a good fit for data-conscious South Africans. However, there is also an option to stream if the user chooses.

The Samsung Z series smartphones are available from Ackermans, PEP, Jet and CNA. They are mostly priced under R1 000.

TurnUp Music launched last year as a standalone app. Users pay between R1 and R5 for a track by linking their WeChat Wallet, or using mobile data.

The service has established and undiscovered South African artists covering a variety of genres, including hip-hop, house, pop, gospel, rock, kwaito, afro-pop and soul.

"Samsung, as the global smartphone leader, is the perfect partner to accelerate not just the streaming platform, but also to reduce barriers to entry across Africa," says Thabiet Allie, CEO of TurnUp Music.

"The 4G-enabled Z series devices are both accessible and affordable, making it a great tool for listening to music and watching videos."

It is free for musicians to upload their music to TurnUp Music. They are then paid out four times a year, at 70% of the price for every track downloaded.

Craige Fleisher, director of integrated mobility at Samsung, says: "Samsung always strives to create technology that enriches people's lives. We are delighted to partner with TurnUp Music in this initiative, bringing local sounds to users and helping to promote local musicians."
