Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi's next flagship smartphone, the Mi 7, will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 845 chip.

This was revealed by Lei Jun, Xiaomi founder, chairman and CEO, speaking during the Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit, in Hawaii, this week.

The new Snapdragon chip is designed to power a range of next-generation Android flagships that will debut in 2018.

In the second quarter of 2017, Xiaomi re-entered the ranks of the world's top five smartphone brands by shipment, according to the latest data from industry consultancies Canalys, IDC and Strategy Analytics.

The company shipped 21.2 million units worldwide, representing a 59% increase from last year, according to IDC.

During the event, Lei emphasised Xiaomi's close relationship with Qualcomm Technologies in the premium tier smartphone market.

"I am very excited to be part of the Snapdragon Technology Summit and reaffirm that Xiaomi's close relationship with Qualcomm Technologies in the premium tier will continue into 2018," said Lei.

"Xiaomi is committed to making devices that combine cutting-edge innovations in technology and beautiful design, while defying price expectations, and we have chosen Snapdragon 845 to power our next flagship smartphone."
