Auto ID tech: making a difference in multiple industries

Advances in auto ID technology mean bar code printers and scanners, and mobile computers, are now able to have a transformative impact across a whole range of industries.

Auto ID solutions bring benefits including insights, security, improved customer experiences and time savings, and are successfully disrupting many sectors.

These three Datalogic case studies from Europe and the USA illustrate how auto ID solutions are making a difference to people's lives in manufacturing, retail and leisure.

Case study one: Packaging

SPR Packaging is a Texas-based supplier of printed films and converted poly bags, known for its excellent customer service. Using its high-quality film formulations saves customers time as it removes the need to adjust packaging equipment during runs, and the company prides itself on its communication skills and rapid fulfilment of orders.

However, SPR Packaging had identified a weakness in its own systems. It wanted to be able to automatically label its pallets so all relevant information pertaining to the contents of each pallet (such as the material, weight, customer ID and order number) would be immediately available.

Automated labelling would also facilitate the entry of all pallets into its inventory system, and the flagging up of any unlabelled pallets for manual attention.

Complete solution

The system had to be compatible with its accounting software, and Datalogic recommended a holistic automated labelling solution using the Matrix 410N and Matrix 120 bar code reader, which could not only read applied labels, but also create queue records for enhanced traceability.

Manual printer backup systems are triggered as a failsafe, with warehouse staff then able to confirm that a pallet has a readable label, correctly orientated for easy warehouse scanning. Verified pallet data is automatically exported to an inventory management system.

Better service and cost savings

SPR was delighted with the "plug-and-play" nature of the installed auto ID solution, which has enabled the company to assign more accurate weights to pallets, improve its audits and raise its inventory accuracy and accountability standards. All of this adds up to a ROI of less than a year, and an even higher level of customer service.

Case study two: Retail

Danish cash-and-carry firm Inco faced both an opportunity and a challenge. As a chain catering mostly to sophisticated professional customers at ease with cashless payment systems, it felt the time was right to transform the traditional retail environment.

Inco also faced the challenge of high labour costs, largely due to the need to employ multiple check-out operators in unstimulating, largely passive, roles. Inco believed its staff members could be redeployed in value-added roles such as customer service.

Datalogic's Joya Touch system, specifically designed for self-shopping environments, proved to be the answer. The result was Inco's Glostrup cash-and-carry store, which has no staffed checkout section. This makes it the first of a new kind of supermarket-style shopping experience.

Thanks to an intelligent barrier system, customers can only enter the store once they have a Joya Touch multifunction mobile computer. The wireless charging and virtual touch-scan button features provide a convenient shopping experience, and the same devices can also be used to perform warehouse and inventory functions.

Trolley-load of benefits

The Datalogic Shopevolution software package allows all devices to be monitored in real-time, giving Inco much deeper insights into customer decision-making. Payment is now made at one of four automated checkout stations, with not a cash desk in sight.

Thanks to scanning during the shopping process, only minimal verification checks are necessary before a customer completes the credit card payment and is able to leave with his/her purchases. Customers save time, and Inco has been able to upskill its cashiers and give them more rewarding customer-facing roles.

Case study three: Access control

With 40 000 music fans attending the three Radio Veronica Top 1000 All Time concerts in Rotterdam, access control was a vital function that the organiser, Ticketpoint, had to get right. After carrying out numerous successful tests, these popular events were chosen to officially roll out its new Datalogic Joya Touch handheld scanners.

Step forward in queue management

These more robust scanners replaced a previous, inadequate system based on converted phones. The Joya Touch proved able to read from printed, scanned and digital tickets with ease, thanks to its patented "Green Spot" technology. As the Joya Touch is backlit, there was no need for the staff on scanning duty to look at screens, meaning scanning was much faster, and queues were correspondingly shorter.

As well as being fast and reliable, so fans gained entry to the venue that much more quickly, the Joya Touch scanners were completely customised to meet Ticketpoint's needs. In addition to the optimum software solutions, the scanners were supplied as Ticketpoint-branded devices for an even more professional look and feel to the operation.

Online, in line, inside

The Joya Touch mobile scanners proved to be music to the ears of the concert organisers. Scanning of tickets proceeded smoothly and rapidly, with none of the frustrating delays caused by outages in the previous system.

The calm, efficient scanning process removed all the stress from the situation, with the Joya Touch handheld scanners taking everything in their stride. From WiFi connectivity to reading less-than-perfect bar codes on folded hard-copy tickets, the entire access control function went without a hitch.
