SITA increases spending on research and development

Johannesburg, 29 Sep 2004

State Information Technology Agency (SITA) has increased its total spending on Research and Development from R14 million last year to R34 million which represents a 236% increase.

In keeping the public sector ICT on the cutting edge, SITA has more than doubled its expenditure on Research and Development as well as the training of young people in ICT.

The Youth Internship Programme (YIP) is SITA' s initiative in the area of ICT training and development of the country's young citizens. The programme is collaboration with Umsobomvu Youth Fund (UYF), Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) and Public Sector Education and Training Authority (PSETA).

SITA CEO, Mavuso Msimang said: "It is testimony to the intrinsic strength of SITA that in a year marked by far-reaching restructuring, the organisation still made a profit."

Meanwhile, SITA's profit has declined from R82 million to R35 million in 2004. Revenue has increased by 17 percent from R1, 9 billion in 2003 to R2, 4 billion this year.

Gross profit has also increased from last year's R392 million to R448 million this year, marking an increase of 14 percent.
