BulkSMS.com sponsors award recognising use of mobile technologies for public good

BulkSMS.com, a leading South African SMS service provider, will sponsor the award category "Best Mobile Application or Service: For a community Project or Non-Profit organisation" at the First Tuesday / Vodacom Mobile Applications Awards 2004.

The aim of the awards is to identify organisations in the South African development sector that have demonstrated service excellence and innovation through the use of mobile technologies.

"Through our involvement in the First Tuesday / Vodacom Mobile Applications Awards we wish to highlight to the public the life-enhancing and lifesaving use of mobile technologies," said Dr Pieter Streicher, managing director of BulkSMS.com. "BulkSMS.com feels strongly that the advantages of mobile technologies used for the benefit of the public should be recognised and celebrated."

According to Streicher: "SMS is seen by many simply as a means to download ringtones and logos. However, many non-profit organisations and community projects are now also using SMS messaging to support initiatives in community health, safety and security, disaster management, and poverty alleviation.

"A key benefit of SMS is that it is the only technology that can instantaneously contact a targeted group of people regardless of their location." Through its involvement in these awards, BulkSMS.com wishes to highlight that SMS messaging extends beyond personal and business applications and can be used to support public sector, community-based and non-profit initiatives.

The awards

The Vodacom Mobile Application Awards 2004, with First Tuesday, is a national competition being run by Vodacom to find the best mobile applications and services in SA. Fifteen finalists in five categories will be selected to present their application to a live audience in Johannesburg on Tuesday, 9 November 2004. The top prizes will be chosen by a jury of mobile industry executives voting for the best mobile applications and services of 2004.

The entry period for submissions to the awards ends on Wednesday, 20 October 2004 at 5pm.

DTTV migration in the balance. The likelihood that SA will have digital TV by its expected deadline of November next year is looking far less possible.
