SITA takes YIP to new heights

Johannesburg, 22 Nov 2004

State Information Technology Agency (SITA) this week welcomed 128 ICT graduates, who were inducted into its Youth Internship Programme (YIP).

The interns will undergo intensive experiential training over the next 12 months, which will include theory and practical training as part of the curriculum.

YIP is SITA' s initiative to engage in ICT development and training, aimed at SA's young individuals from historically disadvantaged background. The programme is a collaboration with Umsobomvu Youth Fund, Department of Public Service and Administration and Public Sector Education and Training Authority.

SITA General Manager for Training and Development, Emily Nthite, says: "YIP is our contribution to the big challenge of unemployment in the country, and as a major player in the ICT sector, SITA and its partners are committed to the alleviation of the growing unemployment among graduates in the sector."

She also added that a course in entrepreneurship will be included for the first time in this year's training curriculum, as a separate module. This is done to cater for learners who have ambitions to start their own businesses.

To date, approximately 366 young people have been trained in the various areas of ICT in the two years since the programme was launched.
