Stafford Masie has resigned his position as head of Google's South African operations, a little after 18 months in the position, the US Internet giant confirmed today.
Masie says he resigned in order to focus on his family. “I have not taken leave since returning to the country from the US in 2003.”
Google's official statement says it is looking for a replacement and it remains committed to its local users, customers and partners. Masie will continue in his position until the end of April.
Masie has developed a reputation for being a colourful, if not a controversial, country head.
Last year, Google became embroiled in a Competition Commission complaint levelled against it by online marketing firm Entelligence, which accused the local Google operation of attempting to take control of its customers, and levelling threats against Entelligence.

Last week, Entelligence filed its answer to Google SA's reply to its complaint at the Competition Commission. Entelligence asserts that Google was behaving in a dominant manner, having attempted to take direct control of one of its clients. When this did not succeed, it threatened to close all of Entelligence's accounts with the search engine giant.
“Google says they are not guilty of anything because a) they are not dominant and b) they did not carry out all of their threats,” Riley says.
Another action that raised eyebrows in the local online marketing community was Masie's drive to have agencies “certified”, and he accused some agencies of actually committing fraud against their customers.
Immediately before taking over as head of Google SA, Masie was in charge of Novell SA and had the uncomfortable task of defending that US software firm's stance on making a deal with Microsoft, much to the annoyance of the local free and open source software community.
Industry views differ on the real reason for Masie's resignation. However, most sources say there was a feeling that Google SA was handling the online agencies differently to how the other international operations were.
“We dealt with Google internationally long before the local operation was set up and our experiences with the two were very different,” one source says. “The whole issue with Entelligence also caused a lot of people to question what Google's local intentions really are. Were they friends looking to build partnerships or would we have to cover our backs?”
Another source says: “Masie was becoming increasingly frustrated by the whole US corporate set-up. He told me he spent more time reporting than actually seeing clients and doing what he had to do, and that he had Sarbanes Oxley [the stringent US financial governance law] up to his neck.”
Masie, who is on holiday with his family, says: “Google is an amazing company and will really do well in the local market. But I need some time out for the time being. I have a number of other options available to me, but I am not exploring those just yet.”

| It is clear that Sean Riley as his croons have been dredging the web and commenting on this story. Sickening! Stafford is the most charismatic, intelligent and visionary individual I have met in the marketing industry. He worked closely with us for several months and it was so beneficial. My CEO said in a meeting this morning that we should find him and try get him to work for us. Everybody agreed! We will miss Stafford while he is gone! | |
|
He left because he was tired of Riley's advances and invitations to clandestine meetings in hotel rooms for quickies. Good luck to you Stafford. Forget about Riley, he will find another lover. |
|
| HE DESERVED TO LOSE THE NUMBER 1 JOB IN THE COUNTRY. AT LEAST GOOGLE SAW THROUGH HIM FINALLY...'DONT BE EVIL' IS GOOGLE'S MANTRA. I AM SURE SOMEONE OUT THERE KNOWS THE REAL REASON .... | |
|
Its a lie, he didnt resign, he was fired. After all he has caused in SA and tarnished the Google name, we were all expecting this. Resigned, please. No of a case of: Stafford, please hand in your resignation by 1 pm this afternoon and we will not make a example out of you. |
|
| Sean, yet again it is NOT about you!! you seriously have an ego problem that you personlise everything, get over yourself. Stafford is well respected and a better man than you could ever be... your name on the other hand is debatable within the industry..be careful to comment on something you have NO idea about. | |
|
The guy was disliked by everyone in the industry (except Lance), and only opened his mouth to change feet. HQ eventually gets tired of the "noise" and provides the PR template, you just get to pick the option that fills in the blanks... a)more time with your family, b)other business opportunities, or c)flying a kite. Well done to those people in the industry that made a noise and would not except a new bully in their backyard. |
|
| Once again it shows the lack of understanding of an overseas company to the local environment. This was so predictable... | |
| I find it amazing that most American companies and their so-called stringent reporting regimes have been the architects of the economic disasters we face today. If indeed it was Sarbanes Oxley up to his neck, then one may be right in deducing that Google was cooking it`s share price to keep investors happy. Meanwhile, rubbing everyone the wrong way. I have much respect for Stafford and wish him well in his future endeavours. | |

Sean Riley had been loddying Google Inc. long ago and was bitter when Google decided to appoint Stafford. The only reason may `disliked` him was because he was EFFECTIVE at what he did. Period. Many jokers like Sean and his ilk profess to know the search/online advertising business when all they do is cobble some home-made application, fancy graphics and fool advertisers. Anyone who ever engaged Sean`d company beyond repetitive gifs and misdirected URL`s will attest to this. It is a real pity that conmen, jokers, clowns and toilet cleaners are approached by the media to comment on ICT in the country. PS: Probably because they are personally known to certain journalists? See then preening at ITWEB events and you will have the answers. Yuk! Sean, you are a sick person and should be put in a straight-jacket, fed brake fluid and then sent to work as a foreman for the bur rapid transport system as a foreman. You belong there. |
|
| Sean Riley, you are sickening! You dont know what you are talking about and taking advantage of this opportunity to throw more mud...is pathetic and just displays completely what a low life you are! I know Stafford and I am aware of what he is personally having to deal with right now! Give the guy a damn break to sort out his personal life! To even think this had something to do with you...or Google Ireland not being happy with him...is just more of your crap being milled by ITWeb - I am so surprised they again gave you a platform to say what you have! Stafford was incredible and what he did for Novell and now Google was simply outstanding! I am aware that Google has again gagd; him from saying much about his departure...but I am also aware that he has invested in two startup businesses. Sean...youre an idiot and a liar! Stafford, if you get to read this...go well...youre well respected out here and the way you handled the Entelligence thing with this guy was brilliant! Get your family sorted young man...well be watching the horizon to see you again...the IT industry in SA wont be that much fun while youre gone! (ITWeb...quality check the people you engage in your stories...for goodness sake!) | |
