Ghana climbs BPO rankings

After seven years of driving IT projects, Ghana has reaped the benefits, according to a study by AT Kearney, reports Computer World Kenya.

The report, titled the '2009 AT Kearney global services location index', ranked countries for their ability to handle business process outsourcing (BPO). While India led the rankings globally, Ghana had the top overall ranking in sub-Saharan Africa, though in terms of actual BPO revenue, SA is still the continent's leader.

Yaw Owusu, MD of Gateway Innovations, says: "Ghana scored the highest (followed closely by India) out of the 50 countries ranked on financial attractiveness, which measures compensation cost, infrastructure cost, tax and regulatory cost.”

African schools to get 500 000 PCs

NComputing has landed a United Nations (UN) deal to provide 500 000 workstations to primary and secondary schools in developing nations by 2012, says CRN Australia.

The programme is being developed by the UN department of economic and social affairs global alliance for ICT development.

The first pilot project was completed in Burkina Faso, with additional projects spanning Rwanda, Senegal, and Tanzania scheduled to begin this year.

Africa strengthens distance learning

The president of Senegal, Abdoulaye Wade, has outlined his vision for radical change in African education and criticised European governments for restricting access for African students, states Modern Ghana.

The president outlined his plans for technological advances, particularly in higher education, and emphasised that ICTs could speed up the learning process.

The president says that e-learning is the answer for African education.
