Most companies experience similar problems in terms of data warehousing, says Martin Rennhackkamp, COO of PBT Group.

Rennhackkamp was speaking at ITWeb's Data Warehousing conference, held at Vodaworld, last week.

He spoke about several problematic issues, including scope management. “The biggest risk is scope creep,” he said, and proposed breaking a project into smaller pieces to make it more manageable. “It's a programme, rather than one big project.”

Another problem he mentioned is that of implementation approach. “There isn't one approach that suits everyone,” he said.

According to Rennhackkamp, the key to solving this problem is thoroughness. He advocated thorough planning, designing and architecting upfront, as well as thorough data analysis and profiling, and stringent quality standards.

Of the common problems people often cite, Rennhackkamp also mentioned information exploitation and dealing with the corporate partnership in a business intelligence competency centre (BICC).

One of the solutions for information exploitation, according to Rennhackkamp, is the appropriate application, approach, implementation and business integration of advanced analytics.

He believes advanced analytics "starts making our lives more complex, but at the end of the day, it's what gives value to the business".

For the problems facing a BICC, he suggested getting the business involved, and getting top-level executive buy-in.
