Juniper accelerates networking push

Juniper Networks has introduced a raft of new software, processors and cloud networking systems for enterprises and service providers in a push towards open software platforms and fully programmable networks, according to ZDNet UK.

The networking company unveiled the products alongside new partnerships with Dell and IBM that will see those hardware companies resell Juniper's networking gear. According to Juniper chief executive, Kevin Johnson, the company is embracing a "new approach to networking," that meets the growing demand for Internet-based services.

"Networks are now clearly the hub of business and community around the world, and that's driving massive scale requirements for the next decade," Johnson said in a statement.

Microsoft shuts down MSN direct

MSN Direct, Microsoft's data broadcast network, is to be switched off in 2012, leaving many users bereft of updates and another Microsoft initiative in the dust, states The Register.

Microsoft will be switching off broadcasts over its MSN network at the end of 2011, ending the company's half-decade foray into wireless consumer electronics and demonstrating that mobile telephone networks can provide for every kind of connectivity.

MSN Direct is a broadcast service that piggybacks on FM radio signals to send weather, news and traffic information to receive-only devices.

Alcatel-Lucent intros smaller routers

Alcatel-Lucent has unveiled two IP routers designed to provide smaller communities with" the same advanced mobile, residential and business services currently delivered in larger metropolitan areas. The new products ... will extend the benefits of service routing further out into the network," writes eWeek.

The 7750 SR-c12 and 7750 SR-c4 servers "are powered by the FP2 chip set, Alcatel-Lucent's ... [own] silicon [that] delivers sophisticated and optimised network processing and traffic management at speeds up to 100Gbps.

“Both also run under the same operating system as the entire Service Router family for seamless interworking, consistent service delivery and simplified operations," says Alcatel-Lucent.
