Facebook sponsors Apache Foundation

Facebook is working towards giving more back to the open source development community by becoming a Gold sponsor of the Apache Software Foundation, reports Softpedia.

"From the day Mark Zuckerberg started building Facebook in his Harvard dorm room in 2004, the site has been built on common open source software such as Linux, Apache, memcached, MySQL, and PHP," says David Recordon, Facebook's senior open programs manager.

The social network will donate $40 000 per year to the foundation to become a Gold sponsor. Facebook says it owes a lot to the open-source community and the technologies it developed.

Alfresco plans to integrate its content management software with IBM Lotus software's team collaboration and content management tool Quickr, says iWorld Canada.

IBM/Lotus already offers integration software called Lotus Quickr services for IBM FileNet that marry Quickr and IBM's FileNet Content Manager.

The company says it will unveil Alfresco Content Services for Lotus social collaboration software at IBM's annual Lotusphere conference in Orlando.

Open sourced business intelligence (BI) software Palo, developed by Jedox, is being showcased in Australia, according to Inside SAP.

Palo is an in-memory OLAP open source solution for planning and forecasting with native connectors to major ERP systems, including SAP. The software allows for the seamless movement of data between Palo and the ERP to ensure consistency, accuracy and traceability of the numbers.

Chris Mentor, director at Naked Data, says: “Open source has moved beyond backend servers and into fully-fledged enterprise applications. It is a way of saying that Palo has well and truly arrived in Australia.”
