The Wits Wargames Club, an affiliate of Mind Sports SA (MSSA), will host the first South African Heroes of Newerth LAN tournament.

According to MSSA president, Colin Webster, the Heroes of Newerth LAN tournament will allow South African gamers and teams to compete online and at a LAN event simultaneously for the first time.

Webster says that due to the popularity of the game, only 16 teams made up of five players will be allowed to enter the tournament.

“MSSA is very excited about the tournament. Anything that gets gamers playing in a controlled environment is great, and the nice thing is that Wits is in a good position to have the technology available and skills to run a fair and competitive tournament,” explains Webster.

Heroes' reward

The Heroes of Newerth is a PC game based on Warcraft 3's Defence of the Ancients. Each game pits two teams of one to five players, called the Legion and Hellbourne, against each other.

Each player selects a role-playing hero and a game ends when one of the team's main structures is destroyed; either the World Tree for the Legion, or the Sacrificial Pit of the Hellbourne.

The prize for first place will be $300 cash and five free prepaid Heroes of Newerth accounts. The Lair will administer the tournament and the network will be provided by Mayhem.

The tournament, sponsored by S2 Games, the publishers of Heroes of Newerth, will be held on 13 March at the Old Mutual Sports Hall at Wits University. Gamers can register for the tournament here.
