International, local “heavyweights” to address ICSE 2010, in Cape Town

Johannesburg, 08 Mar 2010

In a South African and African first, ICSE: The International Conference on Software Engineering for 2010, will be hosted on South African soil and has a glittering list of keynote speakers, whose participation confirms the value, quality and importance of this premier international event for software engineering.

It provides a world-class forum for software engineering professionals from industry, government and academia to hear about and discuss the latest developments, trends and innovations in software engineering.

ICSE 2010 will take place at the beginning of May in Cape Town, one of the world's most beautiful cities, at a world-class convention centre and organised by a top international team.

The ICSE conference is to be opened by The Most Reverend Desmond Tutu, Archbishop Emeritus of Cape Town. Bishop Tutu is one of South Africa's most famous sons, recipient of the 1984 Nobel Peace Prize, and author of the book "Reconciliation: the Ubuntu Theology". ICSE 2010 is most honoured to have him present the opening address.

South African born Professor Sir David King will be a keynote speaker at ICSE 2010. He is the Director of the Smith School of Enterprise and Environment at the University of Oxford, and was the UK Government's Chief Scientific Adviser and Head of the Government Office of Science from October 2000 to 31 December 2007. As Director of the Government's Foresight Programme, he created an in-depth horizon scanning process, which advised government on a wide range of long-term issues, from flooding to obesity. He also chaired the government's Global Science and Innovation Forum from its inception and was heavily involved in the Government's Science and Innovation Strategy 2004-2014. He continues as Director of Research in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Cambridge, and is currently President of the British Science Association.

Professor Fred B Schneider will keynote on “Beyond Hacking: An SOS!” Prof Schneider is the Samuel B Eckert Professor of Computer Science at Cornell, where he has been on the faculty since 1978. He also serves as Chief Scientist for the NSF "TRUST" Science and Technology Centre, and he has been Professor-at-Large at the University of Tromso (Norway) since 1996.

He is a member of the board for the Computing Research Association and the council of the Computing Community Consortium. He serves on the US congressionally mandated Information Security and Privacy Advisory Board, as well as several other federal advisory boards, and he also co-chairs Microsoft's TCAAB advisory board on trustworthy computing.

Clem Sunter needs little introduction to the South African public, as he is so well known and highly regarded here. Clem was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Cape Town for his work in the field of scenario planning. He was also voted by leading South African CEOs as a speaker who has made the most significant contribution to, and impact on, best practice and business in South Africa.

Clem worked for many years for the Anglo American Corporation and in 1973 transferred to the Head Office of Anglo American Corporation of South Africa in Johannesburg. He spent most of his subsequent career in the Gold and Uranium Division, serving as its Chairman and CEO from 1990 to 1996. At the time it was the largest gold producer in the world.

Since 1987, he has authored 14 books, some of which have been bestsellers. His other main interest is seeking to mobilise the private sector in the war against HIV/Aids.

With a line-up like this, ICSE 2010 is a not-to-be-missed conference, with its extensive conference programme, 18 technical tutorials, 24 workshops, a programme of demonstrations and an exhibition along with social functions.

More than 450 international delegates have already confirmed their registration for ICSE 2010, and this presents a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity for South African ICT practitioners, educators and students to learn and network locally with like-minded colleagues from around the world.
