Sprint releases first US WiMax phone

The long-awaited 'first WiMax phone' is set to be unveiled by Sprint at this week's CTIAWireless event in Las Vegas, writes Rethink Wireless.

While not a world first, since Korea's KT and Russia's Yota have offered smartphones for over a year, it will be an important breakthrough for Sprint's mobile broadband service. The service runs on Clearwire's WiMax network, which is its key weapon in stemming churn among high value customers this year.

Like Yota's GSM/WiMax handset, Sprint's Supersonic CDMA/WiMax device will be made by HTC.

Infinite Peripherals intros retail POS gadget

Infinite Peripherals has released a gadget that attaches to the iPod touch, allowing retailers to efficiently check customers in or out while shopping, says Softpedia.

Linēa-pro is a patent-pending device including a bar code scanner and a magnetic stripe reader that, according to the company, harnesses the power and portability of the iPod touch.

Furthermore, the gizmo can interact with other software applications installed on the iPod, allowing for ID verification, inventory management, lead tracking, inspection, workflow, as well as asset tracking, dispatch, time, labour, and lab and healthcare.

Gadget tracker released

Phone Halo has unveiled a tool for finding misplaced gadgets, says CNet News.

The offering turns a BlackBerry or Android phone into a handheld finder. Unlike some more traditional key finder hardware, Phone Halo integrates Bluetooth and GPS to create a tethered radius for gadgets.

So, if one of them goes out the door without the other, the owner gets a message via cellphone, e-mail and even Twitter.
