Verizon to expand 3G network

Verizon Wireless plans to spend $16.8 million in 2010 on adding more capacity to its advanced high-speed 3G network in Indiana, with $1.6 million of that amount dedicated to the Evansville area, according to company officials, reports Evansville Courier & Press.

The coverage for the Evansville area includes Patoka, Princeton, Owensville, Haubstadt, Mount Vernon, Newburgh, Chandler, Boonville, New Harmony, Poseyville Wadesville in Indiana.

The state-wide enhancements are designed to ensure Verizon Wireless customers can continue using their wireless devices to access the Internet, view high-quality videos, download music, games and ring tones, and send and receive e-mail.

Motorola realigns business

Motorola has realigned its four major businesses as it gets ready to split into two publicly traded companies by the first quarter of 2011, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, says BusinessWeek.

Its mobile devices division, which makes cellphones, and home unit will fall under the purview of one company with Sanjay Kha, co-chief executive of Motorola, as its CEO. The home unit makes things such as cable TV set-top boxes.

Net sales of the mobile devices unit came to $7.15 billion in 2009 but it posted an operating loss of $1.2 billion. The home division had net sales of $3.9 billion and operating profit of $16 million.

Cisco targets home wireless market

Cisco Systems will begin selling a line of home-market wireless routers that the networking giant is touting for its modest design, ease of use and potential for widespread appeal, states ITChannelPlanet.

The vendor is offering its fresh brand of consumer routers, called the Valet, in two versions at different functionality and price points.

“Valet is home wireless made easy,” says Jonathan Kaplan, senior vice-president and GM, Cisco Consumer Products.
